My Baby and Speech Therapy: Why Does It Matter?

March 28, 2025

As a parent, you may wonder why your baby or toddler might need speech therapy if they aren’t even talking yet. However, it is important to remember that speech therapy for young children looks different from therapy for school-age kids because it focuses on early communication skills and developmental milestones.

How Is Speech Therapy Different for Babies and Toddlers?

Speech therapy for infants and toddlers is designed to help them develop foundational communication skills. These early skills include making sounds, engaging in back-and-forth interactions and using gestures—all essential building blocks for talking later on.

What Does Speech Therapy Look Like for Babies and Toddlers?

One of the biggest differences in therapy approaches is how children learn best. Toddlers and babies learn through play, so therapy is play-based and interactive. The therapist engages with both the child and caregiver, demonstrating techniques that parents can use at home to encourage communication.

How Do Parents Participate in Therapy?

For infants and toddlers, parent involvement is essential. In private practice settings, the therapist works directly with the child and then provides parents with real-time examples of strategies they can use throughout the day. Since parents spend the most time with their child, they play a key role in supporting their communication development.

What Skills Does Speech Therapy Target in Babies and Toddlers?

Before babies start talking, they develop several important pre-speech skills, such as:

  • Joint Attention: Learning to focus on a toy or activity while also engaging with a parent or therapist.
  • Vocal Turn-Taking: Taking turns making sounds, which lays the foundation for conversation.
  • Using Gestures: Waving, pointing and reaching as early forms of communication.

Babies also begin practicing sounds through babbling. Parents may notice their child making repetitive sounds that mimic real speech. Encouraging this “baby talk” by responding and engaging in back-and-forth interactions helps them build confidence in communication.

How Can Parents Encourage Communication at Home?

There are many simple and fun ways to help your baby develop communication skills:

  • Talk to your baby throughout the day during daily routines like diaper changes, mealtime and bath time.
  • Read books together to build attention and foster engagement.
  • Sing repetitive songs to encourage your baby to imitate and fill in words.
  • Play social games like peek-a-boo and patty-cake to strengthen social interaction and turn-taking.

Why Is Early Speech Therapy Important?

The first three years of life are critical for speech and language development. If your child is struggling with communication, a speech therapist can support both you and your baby by providing guidance, tools and strategies to help them reach important milestones.
