Teaching Friendship to Young Learners at the Melinda Webb School

February 14, 2025

two boys celebrating friendship day

Valentine’s Day is often associated with love and affection, but this year, we’re making a special change by celebrating Friendship Day with our toddler, preschool and kindergarten Melinda Webb School students. It’s the perfect opportunity to teach our students the values of kindness, empathy and what it truly means to be a good friend.

We welcome you to take a quick glimpse into the meaningful activities we had to help students explore friendship in a fun and interactive way.

Baking Up a Good Friend

The celebration kicked off with a creative and hands-on activity called “Baking Up a Good Friend.” Teachers drew a large cupcake as a canvas for a fun and engaging discussion about the qualities that make someone a good friend. Each child had the opportunity to add sprinkles to the cupcake, with each sprinkle representing a different quality of friendship, such as sharing, being kind and helping others.

For example, as we discussed qualities like “listening to others” or “being helpful,” the children added those ideas as sprinkles on the cupcake. This visual activity reinforces the idea that friendships are built with small, positive actions that add up over time, —just like how sprinkles decorate a cupcake. It’s a great way to teach kids that being a good friend involves making thoughtful contributions to the friendship!

Friends Coloring Book

Next, students participated in another fun activity where they created their very own Friends Coloring Book. Each page in the book focuses on a different aspect of friendship—whether it’s playing together, helping each other or saying kind words. After coloring, the children assembled the pages into a book that they took home and shared with their families. This activity helps reinforce what they’ve learned about being a good friend in a way that they can reflect on later. Plus, it’s a great keepsake for parents!

Cupcakes with Sprinkles: A Sweet Friendship Snack

No celebration is complete without a treat! Thanks to our wonderful Parent Teacher Organization, the students enjoyed cupcakes with white frosting, just like the ones they decorated with sprinkles during the activity. After the lesson, each child added their own colorful sprinkles to their cupcake to mirror the earlier activity that discussed the different qualities of a good friend. It was a delicious way to reinforce the day’s lessons, and the students had a blast decorating their cupcakes while enjoying a fun snack with their classmates.

A Meaningful Lesson in Friendship

The goal of Friendship Day is not only to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a fun, non-traditional way, but also to teach young learners the importance of being kind and considerate toward others. Through these engaging activities, the children gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a good friend, and they’ll carry these valuable lessons with them as they continue to grow and form new relationships. By learning the basics of friendship, we help lay the foundation for positive social interactions throughout their lives.

This Valentine’s Day, we’re not just celebrating love—we’re celebrating the wonderful bonds of friendship that help our students grow into caring, compassionate individuals. Here’s to a sweet, meaningful Friendship Day for all!
